A 25-year-old housewife, Salamatu Danjuma, from Nadabo village in Tafawa Balewa local government area of Bauchi State, has been arrested for allegedly killing her husband following a domestic dispute over child custody.
According to preliminary investigations, the couple had ongoing marital conflicts over the custody of Salamatu's six-year-old daughter from a previous relationship. Initially, discussions with her family suggested that the child would be welcomed into their home. However, her husband later changed his stance, leading to escalating tensions.
The situation took a tragic turn when, during a heated argument, Salamatu, reportedly feeling cornered by her husband's refusal, grabbed a knife from their bedroom and fatally attacked him.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Command, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, stated in a press release yesterday that the suspect was apprehended on February 24, 2025. "Responding swiftly to a distress call, detectives from the Bununu Police Divisional Headquarters were dispatched to the scene.
"The victim was immediately evacuated to the Cottage Hospital in Bununu for urgent medical attention," Wakil said. "Unfortunately, medical personnel later confirmed his death due to the severity of the injuries sustained."
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Auwal Musa Mohammed, has ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to conduct a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter. According to police, upon completion of the investigation, appropriate legal action will be taken.
