Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria – May 18, 2026(Series News Online)- Senator Muhammadu Adamu Aliero has been affirmed as the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate for Kebbi Central Senatorial District for the 2027 general election following a voice vote at the party’s primaries in Birnin Kebbi.
The affirmation came after aspirant Kabir Sani Giant withdrew from the race, clearing the path for Aliero to secure the ticket unopposed.
State APC Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Kana, said the party received Giant’s withdrawal letter on Sunday and accepted it the same day. He confirmed the development at the Kebbi Central Senatorial primaries held at the Haliru Audu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi on Monday.
“The primaries were conducted in line with the party’s guidelines as well as INEC regulations,” Kana said.
The exercise was supervised by the National Committee on Senate Primaries deployed to Kebbi State to oversee the primaries for the three senatorial seats within the APC. Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, were also on ground to monitor and supervise the conduct of the process.
Stakeholders from the eight local government areas that make up Kebbi Central Senatorial District witnessed the process. The LGAs are Birnin Kebbi, Kalgo, Bunza, Jega, Aliero, Gwandu, Maiyama, and Koko-Besse.
Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, was also present at the venue to lend his support.
“Governor Idris gave his voice in affirming Senator Aliero as the APC candidate for the senatorial seat,” a party official said at the event.
Speaking after the affirmation, Aliero thanked the delegates and party leadership for the confidence reposed in him.
“I remain committed to serving the people of Kebbi Central and advancing the progressive agenda of our party under President Bola Tinubu and Governor Nasir Idris,” he said.
The affirmation marks Aliero’s return to the APC fold after revalidating his membership in 2025 following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Senator Aliero has a long political career spanning more than two decades. He served as Governor of Kebbi State from 1999 to 2007 before moving to the National Assembly.
He first served as Senator for Kebbi Central from June 2007 to December 2008. After a stint as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from December 2008 to March 2010, he returned to the Senate in 2015 and has held the seat since.
This means Aliero is set to contest for a fourth term in the Senate in 2027.
The 2027 general election is scheduled for February 2027, and the Kebbi Central seat is expected to be a key contest in the state’s political landscape.
