Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria – May 16, 2026(Series News Online)- The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence, TWG on GBV, Kebbi State, has visited a 13-year-old rape survivor at the Kebbi State Medical Centre, Kalgo, pledging continued support and warning against any form of neglect or intimidation toward the child.
The delegation, led by the State Coordinator of WRAPA Kebbi State Office and Secretary of the TWG on GBV, Comrade Nasiru Idris, visited the hospital on May 15, 2026, at about 11:03 a.m. The team met with medical staff to assess the survivor’s condition and offer solidarity during what officials described as “a deeply traumatic period.”
“The visit was a show of compassion, solidarity, and commitment to justice,” Comrade Idris said during the engagement.
The minor was admitted on May 13, 2026, after going into labour and delivered a baby through a Caesarean section on May 14, 2026, under the supervision of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, SARC, Kalgo.
According to Amina Abdulaziz, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit, “The operation was successfully carried out, and both mother and baby were stabilised.”
Following the delivery, the survivor underwent a thorough medical and psychological examination by the SARC team. To protect her privacy and dignity, she was placed in a private room away from other nursing mothers.
Officials said the arrangement was intended to provide her with “privacy, safety, and a more supportive environment during this painful experience.”
Since the case was reported, security agencies and members of the TWG on GBV have been monitoring developments to ensure the survivor receives proper care, protection, and access to justice. During the visit, the team donated essential post-delivery items for the young mother and her newborn.
The TWG on GBV issued a stern warning to family members and stakeholders to treat the survivor with dignity and respect.
“Any form of neglect, intimidation, discrimination, or mistreatment against the child will attract serious legal consequences and immediate action from the TWG on GBV structure in Kebbi State,” the team stated.
The delegation also reiterated the commitment of the First Lady of Kebbi State, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, who chairs the TWG on GBV.
“Her Excellency remains deeply committed to ensuring that cases of sexual violence are handled with seriousness, sensitivity, and strict adherence to justice,” the team said.
The warning followed concerns raised by medical personnel that the survivor had not received adequate emotional and social support from some relatives.
During the visit, the 13-year-old survivor disclosed that the alleged perpetrator had failed to honour a promise to marry her, an arrangement reportedly reached between him and her parents.
The team concluded the visit with thanking the doctors, nurses, and SARC personnel for their professionalism.
“We appreciate the doctors, nurses, and SARC personnel for their professionalism, empathy, and tireless dedication in handling the sensitive case with care and humanity,” Comrade Idris said.
The TWG on GBV urged the public to promptly report any act of intimidation, neglect, or abuse against the survivor for immediate intervention, assuring that the matter would be pursued “diligently and responsibly until justice is fully served.”
