A Northern youth advocacy group, Northern Star Initiative, has condemned the aerial bombing of Gidan Bida and Runtawa communities in Silame local government area of Sokoto State, which resulted in the death of at least ten innocent civilians and destruction of property.
According to Dr. Abdullahi Idris, Director General of the Movement, despite conflicting accounts of the incident, one undeniable fact remains: the communities were bombed, and innocent lives were lost. Dr. Idris has called on the federal government to establish an independent investigative committee to uncover the truth behind the incident.
The Northern Star Initiative also drew attention to a similar incident last year, where the Tudun Biri community in Kaduna State was bombed while celebrating el-el maulud, resulting in loss of lives. Dr. Idris emphasized that such "errors" are becoming too frequent and costly in terms of human lives, urging the military authorities to take immediate action to prevent further incidents.
Dr. Idris stressed the need for an independent, high-level investigation into the incident, recommending that those found liable be punished and that adequate compensation be provided to the families of the victims. He also took the opportunity to wish Nigerians a happy season.
