Nigeria's Hunger Crisis Deepens as Stampedes Claim Lives-- CISLAC

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has condemned the alarming state of hunger and desperation in Nigeria, highlighting the devastating impact of poor governance and inadequate response to rising poverty levels. Executive Director Auwal Musa Rafsanjani described the recent tragic stampedes during food distribution events as heartbreaking reflections of the severe hardship Nigerians are enduring.

According to Rafsanjani, "This is a clear indication that Nigerians are facing very difficult times under this administration. Unfortunately, the government appears detached from the realities on the ground and has failed to take the necessary steps to address a situation they helped to escalate." He emphasized that many more tragic incidents may be occurring unnoticed due to the desperation and hunger prevalent among citizens.

Recent incidents in Abuja, Anambra, and Oyo states have resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and left many injured. In Abuja, a stampede during a food distribution exercise at Holy Trinity Catholic Church claimed ten lives, including four children. A similar incident in Okija, Anambra State, resulted in the death of at least 12 people and left over 30 others injured. In Ibadan, Oyo State, a children's funfair turned fatal due to an overcrowded entrance, resulting in the loss of many young lives.

Rafsanjani stressed that these incidents are avoidable and highlight the depth of hunger and deprivation in Nigerian society. He urged the government to adopt measures to address food insecurity, create jobs, and alleviate the suffering of the people. CISLAC also emphasized the need for federal and state governments to prioritize policies that tackle poverty and inequality while ensuring the safety and dignity of citizens during public aid and relief programs.

The organization called for improved planning and coordination during such events to prevent further loss of life. Rafsanjani noted that the tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the growing desperation among Nigerians and the urgent need for effective and compassionate governance to address the challenges facing the nation. Nigeria's hunger crisis is further exacerbated by escalating insecurity, reduced agricultural production, and inadequate government response.
