Kebbi State has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a polio-free status, with the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Sama'ila Muhammadu Mera, revealing that the state has not recorded a polio case since 2011. However, he emphasized that there is no room for complacency.
The Emir, who is also the Chairman of the Traditional Leaders Council against Polio and Co-Chairman of the Kebbi State Task Force on Immunization, expressed his gratitude to Governor Nasir Idris for his unwavering support in keeping polio at bay in Kebbi.
Governor Nasir Idris, while flagging off the Polio Outbreak Response Immunization Campaign in Birnin Kebbi, reiterated his administration's commitment to ensuring a polio-free society. He emphasized that the state government will continue to collaborate with partners and stakeholders to reach every child in remote communities and difficult terrain, administering immunization to eliminate polio.
The Governor urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, local government officials, and community heads to lend their support to the exercise, ensuring that every child is vaccinated. He also commended healthcare workers for their professional commitment to service.
As part of the campaign, the Governor donated N5 million cash to district heads who mobilized parents and children to receive immunization. The Commissioner for Health, Comrade Yunusa Isma'ila, noted that the administration of Governor Nasir Idris has placed a premium on the health of the people and improvement of the health sector.
Dr. Nasir Zurmi, the representative of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other donor partners, commended the Kebbi State Government for its robust response to polio elimination, achieving 100% success in this direction. He assured that the WHO will continue to offer valuable support to uphold this trend.
The flag-off ceremony also featured the distribution of various gift items to children who received the anti-polio vaccine, courtesy of the state government.
