Rep Koko Slams Kebbi Govt's Defensive Stance on Legislative Irregularities, Says It Undermines Separation of Powers

 Former House of Representatives member, Honourable Shehu Muhammad Koko, who represented the Koko/Besse and Maiyama Federal Constituency, has denounced the Kebbi State government's defensive posture regarding alleged legislative irregularities, particularly the purchase of vehicles for campaign purposes, which contravenes electoral laws.

 In a statement issued by Muhammad Muhammad, Special Assistant on Strategic Communications, Koko advised the Kebbi State government to meticulously review analytical content before proffering contributions.

 Koko referenced a press release titled "RE: Misrepresentation of Hon. Shehu Muhammad Koko’s Constituency and the Role of the Executive in Legislative Matters", authored by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ahmed Idris, on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.

 Koko asserted, "My attention has been drawn to a recent press release... in which several inaccuracies and misrepresentations were made concerning Honourable Shehu Muhammad Koko." He emphasized the need to correct the record, stating, "Contrary to what was stated in the release, Honourable Shehu Muhammad Koko represented Koko/Besse and Maiyama Federal Constituency under Kebbi Central Senatorial District, not Kebbi North, as stated in the chief press secretary to the governor's statement."

 Koko urged diligence in public statements, saying, "We urge the authors of the statement to ensure due diligence and accuracy when addressing matters of public record."

 He questioned the executive's role in defending legislative actions, noting, "It is unusual and procedurally questionable for the executive to speak on behalf of the legislature, particularly on issues such as the purchase of vehicles by the Assembly."

 Koko stressed that this undermines the separation of powers, stating, "This not only undermines the doctrine of separation of powers but also raises further concerns about the autonomy and independence of the legislative institution in Kebbi State."

 Addressing the alleged vehicle purchases, Koko remarked, "Their action did not reflect the plights of the people of the state at this period when Nigerians are struggling to survive." He advocated for transparency and accountability, asserting, "The current socio-economic challenges faced by Kebbi citizens, including insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment, demand sincere and inclusive governance, not a defensive posture."

 Koko concluded by calling for constructive dialogue, stating, "Constructive criticism and accountability should be welcomed as ingredients of a healthy democracy. We call on all arms of government and political actors in Kebbi State to uphold transparency, respect institutional boundaries, and engage in issue-based dialogue rather than personal attacks."
