The Matasan Arewa Empowerment and Rights Advancement Association (MAERA) has called for the governorship of Bauchi State to rotate to the Northern part of the state in 2027, in the spirit of fairness, justice, and inclusion. The group made this known in a press conference held in Bauchi, citing the need for power rotation to strengthen democracy and ensure political inclusion.
According to the state chairman of MAERA, Alhaji Sulaiman Doma, the Bauchi State Commissioner for Special Duties and Rural Development, Hon. Faruk Mustapha, is the most qualified candidate to succeed Governor Bala Mohammed. "Hon. Faruk is a youth and politician of substance. His records are visible across the state, and we believe that with him as governor, Bauchi will witness more development. He has the capacity to continue with the good works of Governor Bala Mohammed," Doma stated.
Doma emphasized that power rotation is essential for strengthening democracy and ensuring political inclusion. "Power rotation is good for democracy. It ensures fairness and gives each zone the opportunity to occupy the office of governor," he explained. He argued that since Bauchi State has three senatorial districts, the governorship should rotate from Bauchi South to Bauchi North and then to Bauchi Central.
The group acknowledged that they had not officially consulted Mustapha on the matter but appealed to him to heed their call and join the governorship race. "We pledge to mobilise support for him if his political party grants him the ticket," Doma said.
Highlighting the role of MAERA, Doma noted that though the association is not a political party, it is committed to empowering youths, enlightening them on political participation, and promoting independence through self-reliance. "We are mobilizing youths to become useful citizens irrespective of ethno-religious or political affiliations," he said.
The group, formed in 2014, has branches in all 19 Northern states, with offices in the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State. MAERA's call for power rotation and support for Hon. Faruk Mustapha's potential candidacy reflects the group's commitment to promoting good governance and democratic principles in Bauchi State.
