The Kogi State Muslim community has been urged to share their wealth with the poor and needy, towards promoting economic growth and social justice. Hon. Kadi Muhammed M Bello of the Kogi State Shari'a Court of Appeal made the call in a lecture presented at the 1447AH Hijrah Celebration organized by the Kogi State Council of Ulamau.
Hon. Bello emphasized that Islam encourages donating a portion of one's wealth to those in need, stressing that this is one of the fundamental pillars of the deen. "Charity serves as a way to bring justice, balance, and kindness to every society and community," he said. "It is our hope and prayer that Muslim community fulfill their charitable duty correctly and do their part to eliminating poverty in communities everywhere."
The scholar noted that poverty is not only the lack of material wealth but also the inability to meet essential needs. He commended the present administration under the leadership of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo for prioritizing the welfare of workers in the state, citing the prompt payment of salary and Leave Bonus.
In his opening address, the Chairman of the occasion and Ohi of Okene, HRH Alhaji Isah Okatahi, urged Muslims to reflect on the significance of the Hijrah and its values of brotherhood, compassion, and peaceful coexistence. "We must continuously shun evil acts, for good acts; we should avoid bad behavior and embrace good behavior," he said.
The Chairman of the Kogi State Council of Ulamau, in his welcome address, emphasized the need for Muslims to ensure proper and even distribution of wealth in the society. "Muslims must ensure proper and even distribution of wealth in the society," he said. "As Muslims, we should migrate from lawlessness to law-abiding citizens at all times and in all places."
The event was attended by eminent personalities from across the state, including the Ohimege Igu Koton-karfe, Alhaji Saidu Akawu Salihu, and the Waziri of Lokoja, Alhaji Abdulraham Idris Babakurum. The highlight of the event included the launch of the 1447 Hijrah calendar and a match-past parade by pupils of various Islamic schools in Lokoja.
