The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has taken legal action against the Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC) over its announced local government council elections scheduled for November 16, 2024.
At a press conference held at the APC headquarters in Gusau, the party's Publicity Secretary, Malam Yusuf Idris, disclosed this development. He accused the Zamfara State Government of attempting to manipulate the elections through ZASIEC.
"The APC alleges that a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was inappropriately appointed as ZASIEC chairman, compromising fairness and negatively impacting other parties and citizens," Malam Yusuf stated. This situation hinders candidates from other parties from fully participating in the electoral process, violating the electoral act.
The APC has filed a lawsuit with the Federal High Court to contest the appointment of a card-carrying PDP member as ZASIEC Chairman. On October 14, 2024, Bala Aliyu Gusau announced the election date without reporting to his office or reviewing his responsibilities and schedule, merely 30 days after taking office.
Malam Yusuf welcomed Hon. Member Engr. Sulaiman Abubakar Mahmud Gummi, who recently joined the APC, assuring him and his supporters of full membership rights and privileges. Arrangements for Gummi's formal welcome are underway.
This development comes as other states, like Benue, prepare for local government elections, with the APC successfully nominating candidates. The APC's move highlights the importance of ensuring electoral fairness and adherence to constitutional requirements.
