Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria, April 09, 2026(Series News Online) - The Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU) has launched a massive National Identification Number (NIN) enrollment drive targeting over 100,000 women from 6,000 women affinity groups (WAGs) across five Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Kebbi State.
The five LGAs include Birnin Kebbi, Dandi, Yauri, Bunza, and Zuru. The exercise aims to facilitate financial inclusion for women, championed by the NFWP-SU project in Kebbi state.
"We are launching this initiative because over 70% of our registered project beneficiaries lack NIN, a required Know-Your-Customer (KYC) document for formal banking," said Alhaji Yakubu Muhammed Yauri, State Project Coordinator. "We appreciate the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, for providing an enabling environment for this project."
Mustapha Rabi’u Koko, Head of Operations, explained that Ward Facilitators will mobilize WAG members without NIN to present themselves for enrollment. "Financial inclusion is a process, and NIN registration is the first step," he said.
Abubakar Balarabe Alhaji, NIMC State Coordinator, emphasized the commission's commitment to establishing a comprehensive national database. "NIN is now the primary gateway for all federal social safety net programs," he said.
Beneficiaries expressed relief at the initiative. "Many women had spent personal funds attempting to register without success," said Maimuna Muhammed, a WAG member. "We commend the Nigeria for Women project Scale-Up for bringing the registration to our doorsteps."
The enrollment is ongoing and is seen as a critical step toward institutionalizing Women Affinity Groups and empowering women economically in the state.
