Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the immediate recruitment of 473 medical personnel, including doctors, to strengthen healthcare services across the state. The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Borno State Hospital Management Board, Professor Abubakar Kullima, announced this on Thursday, saying the move aims to improve access to quality medical care for residents.
"The governor has approved the employment of 473 health professionals, including medical doctors, nurses, pharmacists, lab scientists, and other critical health workers, to some of the newly commissioned health centres," Prof. Kullima said. The recruits will be deployed to general hospitals and primary health centres across Borno's three senatorial zones.
Governor Zulum had previously approved special training funds for resident doctors and commissioned new health facilities, including eye and dental hospitals, to expand access to specialized healthcare. "This recruitment is the latest in a series of health sector interventions by the Zulum administration," Prof. Kullima noted.
In a related development, Governor Zulum has directed the immediate implementation of a 100% rural posting allowance for medical doctors and a 40% allowance for nurses working in hard-to-reach areas. "The implementation is designed to attract and retain qualified medical personnel in rural communities," the memo stated. This policy will double the financial remuneration for doctors in rural areas, considering the challenging service conditions and critical need for skilled staff outside Maiduguri.
