Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria – 3 June, 2026(Series News Online)- Hon. Salihu Maikasuwa- Dangoje, member representing Sakaba Constituency, has been elected Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
Lawmakers unanimously elected Maikasuwa-Dangoje on Wednesday during plenary at the Assembly Complex in Birnin Kebbi, following the vacancy created by the death of former Speaker Hon. Mohammed Usman-Zuru.
The Clerk of the House, Alhaji Sulaiman Shamaki, presided over the sitting and conducted the election in line with Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended. The section provides that a House of Assembly shall elect a Speaker from among its members.
“The election became necessary following the vacancy created by the death of the former Speaker, Hon. Mohammed Usman-Zuru,” Alhaji Sulaiman Shamaki said. “The process was conducted in strict compliance with Section 92(1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.”
Alhaji Shamaki announced the result after Alhaji Adamu Birnin-Yauri, APC-Ngaski, moved a motion nominating Maikasuwa-Dangoje for the position. Alhaji Lawal Haruna, APC-Fakai, seconded the motion.
While presenting the nomination, Alhaji Adamu Birnin-Yauri said Maikasuwa-Dangoje was qualified for the office based on his experience in the Assembly.
“Maikasuwa-Dangoje has served in this Assembly for 11 years and has held various leadership positions. He is well qualified for the office of Speaker,” Alhaji Adamu Birnin-Yauri stated.
Following his election, the Clerk administered the oath of office on the new Speaker.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje thanked members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged inclusive leadership.
“I thank honourable members for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I pledge to provide inclusive, transparent, and purposeful leadership for this Assembly,” Alhaji Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje said.
The new Speaker assured lawmakers of his commitment to fostering unity and strengthening legislative activities in the state.
“I am committed to fostering unity among members and enhancing the legislative functions of this House for the benefit of the people of Kebbi State,” Alhaji Salihu Maikasuwa-Dangoje added.
Hon. Maikasuwa- Dangoje also pledged that the Assembly would continue to enact people-oriented laws and improve its oversight functions to promote good governance and sustainable development.
“The Assembly will remain committed to enacting laws that address the needs of our people and will strengthen oversight to ensure good governance and sustainable development in Kebbi State. The emergence of Maikasuwa-Dangoje followed the death of Usman-Zuru on April 7 in Cairo, Egypt, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
