The 5th edition of the Yauri Rigata and Cultural Festival was officially launched on Thursday at a press briefing held in Yelwan-Yauri, with organisers promising a spectacular showcase of heritage, water sports and economic activities from 4th to 7th February, 2026.

Welcoming journalists, the National Chairman of the festival and Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu B. Tafida (Tafidan Yauri), said, “It is my singular honour and privilege to welcome you to this press briefing marking the beginning of the 5th Edition of Yauri Rigata and Cultural Festival.” He explained that “Rigata is a Gunganci word meaning ‘Marine War’; in its social context it connotes buoyancy and prestige.”

Tafida detailed the historical roots of the celebration: “The festival involves riverine maneuvers, including water sports and entertainment. It started about 200 years ago as a display of naval strength of the Gungu people, when warriors boarded various sizes of canoes with different weapons to attack the most dangerous hippopotamus on the River Niger. This required expertise in canoe paddling and naval warfare and also served as a training exercise for upcoming Gungu warriors.” He added that the modern revival of Rigata as a state‑recognised cultural event took place “during the reign of His Royal Highness Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi, the 42nd Emir of Yauri.”

Outlining the programme, Tafida said, “This year’s festival, like its predecessors, is packaged to feature a number of spectacular and thrilling events aimed at showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the people of Yauri Emirate. These events include a Trade Fair Exhibition, Agricultural Show, Cultural Performances, Water Sports and the Rigata Main Event, spread over three days, from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th February, 2026.”

He expressed gratitude to the state government, noting, “At this juncture, I wish to specially appreciate the commendable role of the Kebbi State Government under the able leadership of Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Gamjin Yauri) for ensuring that this festival takes place.” Concluding, Tafida affirmed, “In my capacity as National Chairman, this press briefing officially marks the commencement of the festival with the hope that it will receive the widest media coverage.” He closed with, “Thank you and God bless.”
