Maiyama Council Chairman Holds Press Conference, Denies Misconduct Allegations Before Receiving Assembly Petition

Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State — November 26, 2025(Series News Online)- Hon. Adamu Aliyu Liba, Chairman of Maiyama Local Government, convened a press conference in Birnin Kebbi on Wednesday after a copy of a petition alleging gross misconduct against him surfaced on social media. The petition, filed by the Maiyama Local Government Progressive Union and yet to be officially served to him, was read during the Kebbi State House of Assembly plenary by Speaker Rt. Hon. Mohammed Usman Zuru (Lifiddan Zuru).

The petition lists four accusations: personal appropriation of an 18‑seater Toyota bus, an incomplete electricity supply project from Maiyama to Andarai despite full payment, sale of two caterpillars and a fill‑loader belonging to the council, and unauthorized disposal of plots in Dadin Kowa Market. Speaker Zuru referred the matter to the House Committee on Public Petitions, chaired by Chief Whip Muhammad Sani Garba Tiggi, for investigation, with a report expected next week.

Liba, who has not yet appeared before the assembly, used the press briefing to refute the claims. He explained that the heavy equipment had been auctioned with clearance from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and that the 18‑seater bus remains in his custody, earmarked for political support activities for Governor Nasir Idris and President Tinubu.

“The 18‑seater bus is on ground, it was never sold as alleged by the petitioners. It is in my custody as Chairman of Maiyama Local Government,” Liba said.

Regarding the Andarai electricity project, he asserted full completion and current power supply, noting:

“I wrote to the Governor requesting repairs of Andarai electricity, and he approved ₦245 million for the project. The work is 100 % finished and Andarai is enjoying adequate electricity.”

He challenged the petitioners to produce concrete evidence, adding:

“There is no such allocation of plots in Dadin Kowa during my tenure. Frivolous and baseless allegations of political blackmail cannot succeed without cogent evidence.”

Hon. Haruna Musa, Councillor for Andarai Ward, corroborated the completion of the electricity project in a separate interview, confirming uninterrupted power supply and urging skeptics to visit the community for verification.

Liba concluded with an appeal to residents:

“People of Maiyama should remain calm and law‑abiding. These allegations are mere political distractions and will not deter me from discharging my statutory duties as elected council chairman.”

The House of Assembly will await the committee’s report before deciding on further action.
