To mark World Polio Day, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and its partners, including the Kebbi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (KBPHCDA), organized a quiz competition for primary and secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi. The event took place at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) within the KBPHCDA complex and aimed to assess students' knowledge on polio virus and its prevention.
Five schools participated in the competition: Malala Quarters Primary School, Eramus Academy, Genius Learning Trees Academy, NYSC Primary School, and GGDSS Tudunwada Secondary School. Students from all the schools answered 40 questions on polio virus, with Salihu Sani from Nigeria Health Watch moderating the quiz and Dr. Mubarak Sale leading the panel of judges.
In his remarks, Alhaji Yusuf Umar Sauwa, Health Educator at KBPHCDA, expressed appreciation to the schools, students, parents, and partners, including UNICEF, Nigeria Health Watch, WHO, ACE Groups, and CRS, for their support. "This quiz competition is part of our efforts to educate children about polio virus and empower them to become advocates for its prevention in their schools and communities," he said.
The results of the quiz competition were as follows: Genius Learning Trees Academy topped the list with 18 marks, followed by GGDSS Tudunwada Secondary School with 17 marks, while Malala Quarters Primary School and NYSC Primary School both scored 14 marks, and Eramus Academy scored 13 marks. All participating schools received certificates of participation and transport fees.
Alhaji Sauwa thanked the media for their support, saying, "We appreciate everyone's participation, support, and cooperation. We wish you a safe journey back to your destinations."
