Governor's Wife Leads Cancer Awareness Walk, Donates to Patients

The wife of the Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nafisa Nasir Idris, has led a walk against cancer in commemoration of World Breast Cancer Day 2025. The event, which started from the State Government House and terminated at AP2 roundabout in Birnin Kebbi, aimed to create awareness about the deadly disease and support patients battling with cancer.

In her speech at the State Medical Center Kalgo, Dr. Nafisa emphasized the importance of early detection, saying "early detection saves lives." She encouraged people, especially women, to visit hospitals regularly for check-ups, noting that the state government has improved the healthcare system.

"We are here today to create awareness about cancer and to support patients who are battling with this disease," she said. "I urge everyone to take their health seriously and visit hospitals regularly for check-ups."

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Zaki Abubakar, the Commissioner of Health, Hon. Sama'la Yakubu Augie, and Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Halima Hassan Kamba, commended Dr. Nafisa for organizing the event and for her commitment to improving healthcare in the state.

The event featured a health talk by Dr. Yusuf Tukur from UDUTH Sokoto, who educated women on the signs and symptoms of cancer and how to examine their breasts after menstruation.

Dr. Nafisa and her entourage also visited the Oncology Department of the Federal Medical Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi, where they sympathized with patients and prayed for their quick recovery.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Hamza Balarabe, appreciated the Governor's wife for her compassion and support for cancer patients. "You have sponsored the surgery of many patients and are the first to show such compassion," he said. "We pray that Allah blesses you."

The event included presentations of food and cash gifts of N100,000 to cancer patients at two hospitals, as well as free breast cancer screening.
