"Swift Justice: Kebbi State Police Arrest Mother for Burying Newborn Alive, Earn Commendation from TWG on GBV"

The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kebbi State has commended the Kebbi State Police Command for its prompt, professional, and humane intervention in a tragic incident involving a 20-year-old mother who attempted to bury her newborn baby alive in Kamba, Dandi Local Government Area.

The swift response of the Command's detectives led to the immediate arrest of the suspect, Maryam Atiku, and the rescue of the innocent child, who is now stable and safe. According to Comrd Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the TWG on GBV, this action exemplifies the Command's resolute "zero tolerance" for crime in all its forms.

The TWG, chaired by Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, the First Lady of Kebbi State, praised the Command for its dedication to service delivery, safeguarding lives, protecting the vulnerable, and ensuring justice without compromise. "This laudable display of professionalism not only reinforces the trust of citizens in the Nigeria Police Force but also positions Kebbi State Police Command as a shining model worthy of emulation by other state commands nationwide," the statement read.

Her Excellency has reaffirmed her readiness to continually partner and collaborate with the Command and all relevant stakeholders in sustaining the vital campaign for the protection of women, children, and other vulnerable groups in society. The TWG on GBV has urged the Kebbi State Police Command to maintain its tempo in the fight against crime, ensuring Kebbi State remains a beacon of hope.

The incident, which occurred on June 25, 2025, was discovered by a farmer, Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad, who rescued the baby from a shallow grave. The police command has since arraigned the suspect in court, where she will face prosecution aimed at serving as a deterrent to others.

The Kebbi State Police Command's commitment to protecting vulnerable groups is further demonstrated by its recent arrests of suspects involved in child defilement cases. Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, has reassured residents of the Command's dedication to protecting vulnerable groups and ensuring justice is served.
