Kebbi State TWG on GBV Seeks Royal Backing in Argungu Emirate

The Technical Working Group (TWG) on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Kebbi State has paid an advocacy visit to the Emir of Argungu, His Royal Highness Alhaji Samaila Muhammadu Mera, seeking royal backing in the fight against GBV. The visit, led by TWG Secretary Comrade Nasiru Idris, aimed to deepen collaboration with traditional institutions in the state.

The Emir of Argungu applauded the initiative and reaffirmed his commitment to championing efforts against GBV. "We are ready to collaborate in protecting survivors, raising awareness, and fostering safer communities," he said, highlighting the importance of the Maitalle-Tara Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) in restoring dignity and justice to victims.

Prior to the royal visit, the TWG team engaged with the Provost of Adamu Augie College of Education, Dr. Abubakar Abubakar, to establish a Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) within the institution. The Provost warmly embraced the idea, pledging to constitute the committee without delay.

"We will officially present the proposed SART to the TWG for training, inauguration, and operational support," Dr. Abubakar said. "This move will instill confidence in parents and students alike, ensuring the college remains a safe and supportive learning environment."

The TWG's advocacy visits underscore its resolve to bring GBV services closer to the people, particularly at the grassroots level. By forging strong ties with traditional rulers and academic institutions, the group seeks to build a robust community-driven response network against GBV in Kebbi State.

Comrade Nasiru Idris emphasized that community engagement is crucial in combating GBV, citing the importance of equipping women and parents with knowledge to reduce GBV cases significantly. The TWG plans to establish additional SARC centers in each Emirate in Kebbi State, further solidifying its commitment to addressing GBV.

With the Emir's royal endorsement and institutional commitments, the campaign against GBV in Kebbi is set to gain renewed momentum. The First Lady of Kebbi State, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu, who chairs the TWG on GBV, has expressed dedication to addressing GBV holistically, promoting gender equality through structured collaboration and sustained advocacy.
