The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of 16 innocent travelers from Northern Nigeria in Uromi, Edo State. Addressing a press conference, the CNG described the incident as a "horrific killing" born out of a "grotesque misjudgment" that led to the false accusation of kidnapping against the victims.
The group demanded an immediate and thorough investigation into the tragic event, seeking answers as to why the response from security operatives was alarmingly delayed. "We categorically condemn this act of barbarism and the incitement of local southern youths to commit such a heinous crime," said Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, National Coordinator of the CNG.
The CNG emphasized the need for national unity and mutual respect among all ethnic groups, stressing that the rights of Northerners must be safeguarded, particularly against illegal harassment in their workplaces and communities. The group also advocated for their right to practice their faith freely and to receive protection when they find themselves as minorities in diverse localities.
Furthermore, the CNG condemned the silence exhibited by leaders who claim to represent Northern interests, urging them to take decisive action to ensure the safety and security of Northerners across Nigeria. The group demanded compensation for the families of the victims and called on the government to take decisive action against the perpetrators.
"In a show of solidarity, the group extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and urged all Nigerians to work towards a future where dialogue prevails over violence," Charanchi added.
