The Kebbi State Government has categorically denied allegations of using substandard materials in the ongoing construction of the 6.4-kilometer Argungu dual carriageway. The allegations, published by Sahara Reporters on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, claimed that inferior materials were used, particularly in the construction of culverts.
According to the Commissioner for Works, Engr. Abdullahi Umar Muslim, the culverts were constructed using machine-pressed blocks, which have met all extant global engineering standards. "The Ministry of Works has a dedicated team of Engineers monitoring and supervising the project to ensure full compliance with all the specifications," Engr. Muslim stated.
The project, awarded to Amirco Engineering at a cost of N7,230,373,515.68 by the administration of Gov. Nasir Idris, involves a comprehensive scope of works. This includes upgrading the old single carriageway to a dual carriageway, excavation for side drains and turnouts, construction of access and crossing culverts, provision of sub-base and base course materials, application of MC1, laying of a 40mm compacted asphalt wearing course, and installation of kerbs at the center island.
The project's financial breakdown includes civil works costing N6,826,542,520.68, water relocation at N63,917,995.00, and compensation for structures at N339,913,000.00, bringing the total project cost to N7,230,373,515.68.
Engr. Muslim criticized the Sahara Reporters publication for failing to provide Kebbi State Government with a fair hearing or publishing the actual contract details. He described the publication as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the hard-earned reputation of Gov. Nasir Idris' administration.
The Kebbi State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability in the execution of projects, and has urged the public to disregard the allegations as baseless and misleading. The government has also announced its commitment to completing the project on time, ensuring that it meets the highest standards of quality and safety.
