The Kebbi State Committee on Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival held its inaugural meeting in Birnin Kebbi, aiming to ensure the success of the 2025 event. Chaired by Deputy Governor Sen. Umar Abubakar Tafida, the committee is committed to promoting socioeconomic prosperity in Kebbi.
At the meeting, Sen. Tafida emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, "Governor Nasir Idris has entrusted us with a significant assignment; we must uphold that trust." The committee then inspected event sites in Argungu, including the Kanta Museum, River Mala, Matan Fada River, Fishing Village, Grand Fishing Hotel, and Polo Ground.
During a courtesy visit to the Palace of Emir Alhaji Sama'ila Muhammadu Mera, Sen. Tafida sought royal blessings and support. The Emir praised Governor Nasir Idris for resuscitating the festival, acknowledging its global recognition and economic benefits. "The Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival showcases our cultural dynamics and attracts tourists worldwide," he said.
The Emir advised the committee to extend international invitations and collaborate with global partners to boost the economy. He suggested signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Cultural Skills.
The Argungu Fishing Festival, initiated in 1934, celebrates the end of hostility between the Sokoto Caliphate and Kebbi Kingdom. It promotes unity, fun, and entertainment, featuring activities like canoe races, agricultural showcases, and traditional music performances . The festival has gained global recognition, with over 50,000 fishermen participating in the 2020 edition.
