Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria –June 13, 2026 (Series News Online)– The Technical Working Group on Gender-Based Violence, TWG on GBV, in Kebbi State has completed a six-month course of specialized medical intervention for a child survivor of sexual assault from Bunza Local Government Area.
The State Coordinator of WRAPA Kebbi Office and Secretary of TWG on GBV, Comrade Nasiru Idris, confirmed the completion of treatment and provided details on the case management process.
“The child was discovered in a critical condition on January 16, 2026, in Bunza LGA and was immediately taken into protective custody for medical attention,” Comrade Idris stated.
He explained that initial clinical assessments at Maitella Tara Sexual Assault Referral Centre, SARC, in Kalgo indicated the need for advanced surgical care.
“Following a thorough examination, the Director and Medical Consultant of Maitella Tara SARC, Dr. Nuradden Muhammad, advised an urgent referral to Maryam Abacha Hospital in Sokoto for specialized treatment,” Comrade Idris said.
The case was first reported to security personnel in Bunza before being transferred to the referral centre for forensic and medical evaluation.
“The matter was initially lodged at Bunza Police Station and subsequently forwarded to Maitella Tara SARC in Kalgo for clinical assessment and necessary intervention,” Comrade Idris stated.
“Upon receiving a briefing on the survivor’s critical medical condition, Her Excellency Hajiya Zainab Nasare Kauran Gwandu immediately intervened and assumed full responsibility for the child’s treatment. This included covering all medical expenses, transportation costs, and other related needs throughout the treatment process,” Comrade Idris said.
“After undergoing several months of specialized medical care and surgical procedures at Maryam Abacha Hospital, Sokoto, the survivor has made a full recovery. Medical experts have confirmed that she has regained her health and strength and is now expected to return to school and resume normal childhood activities,” Comrade Idris stated.
“The TWG on GBV expressed profound gratitude to Her Excellency for her compassion, commitment, and swift intervention, which played a pivotal role in saving the life of the young survivor. Appreciation was also extended to all healthcare professionals, stakeholders, and individuals who contributed to the successful treatment and recovery process,” Comrade Idris said.
Security agencies disclosed that investigation into the incident remains active, with efforts focused on identifying and prosecuting the perpetrator.
“While celebrating this significant milestone, authorities confirmed that efforts are still ongoing to apprehend the suspect responsible for the crime. Security agencies continue to investigate the case and are working to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice and made to face the full weight of the law,” Comrade Idris stated.
The group reaffirmed its mandate to strengthen prevention and response mechanisms for gender-based violence across the state.
“The TWG on GBV reiterated its commitment to combating gender-based violence across Kebbi State through sustained community sensitization, particularly in rural areas, as well as diligent follow-up of reported cases to ensure justice for survivors,” Comrade Idris said.
He emphasized that coordinated action and prompt medical response remain critical in supporting survivors and upholding their rights.
“The successful recovery of the young survivor stands as a testament to the importance of timely intervention, collaborative action, and firm support for victims of gender-based violence,” Comrade Idris stated.
