Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria- June 11, 2026 (Series News Online)-A 300-level student of Biochemistry at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, Zaharadeen Nuhu, has died after he was attacked by suspected robbers at an off-campus hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, confirmed the incident in a circular released on Thursday and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.
According to the statement, Nuhu, an indigene of Niger State, was assaulted by armed assailants at his private hostel in Kalgo and sustained severe machete wounds during the attack.
“It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry. He was attacked in one of the private hostels at Kalgo by a group of thieves and sustained severe machete injuries. He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning,” Prof. Magawata said.
The Dean stated that the student was rushed to hospital for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of Thursday.
Prof. Magawata said the university management had notified the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and that a probe into the attack had commenced.
“The university management had contacted the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and investigations into the incident have commenced,” he said.
He added that security surveillance had been heightened in Kalgo and other areas where students reside off campus.
“Security patrols have been intensified in Kalgo and other off-campus areas where students reside,” Prof. Magawata said.
The Dean disclosed that the university would meet with operators of private hostels in Kalgo to enforce stricter safety measures, including better lighting and the employment of night guards.

Prof. Magawata urged students to remain calm and vigilant while avoiding the spread of unverified information that could cause panic.

He also advised students to shun late-night movements, move in groups when necessary, and report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies promptly.

The Dean further disclosed that the deceased was buried on Thursday following a Janazah prayer at the mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.
