Bauchi, Nigeria, May 29, 2026(Series News Online) — Residents of Duguri Community in Alkaleri Local Government Area have praised the Bauchi State Government for its swift intervention following devastating floods that damaged homes, roads, and drainage channels in the area.
A high-powered assessment team dispatched by Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed on Friday inspected the worst-hit locations to evaluate damage and chart short-term and long-term remedial actions.
The team was led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Transport, Engr. Mohammed Hamisu Garba. He said the governor’s directive underscored the administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens against recurring environmental threats.
“The exercise reflects the present administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property and finding lasting solutions to environmental and infrastructural challenges in flood-prone communities,” Engr. Garba said during the inspection.
He added that engineers examined blocked drains, collapsed culverts, eroded roads, and other critical infrastructure to enable the ministry to compile a detailed technical report.
“We inspected affected drainage systems, culverts, roads, and erosion-prone locations to enable the ministry to prepare a comprehensive technical report for immediate government action,” he explained.
Engr. Garba assured residents that the government would not relent in its push for sustainable infrastructure and urban renewal.
“The government remains committed to sustainable infrastructure development, urban renewal, and effective flood control measures aimed at reducing the impact of seasonal flooding across Bauchi State,” he stated.
The Permanent Secretary also cautioned residents against practices that aggravate flooding, particularly indiscriminate waste disposal.
“I urge residents to maintain proper environmental sanitation and avoid dumping refuse into drainage channels,” he warned. “Such practices worsen flooding and block water flow during heavy rainfall.”
He disclosed that contractors responsible for drainage works would be mobilised to Duguri before the end of the weekend.
“Contractors handling drainage-related projects will be mobilised to the site on or before Monday to commence urgent intervention works,” he said.
Engr. Garba reiterated the administration’s broader pledge to tackle environmental degradation and improve living conditions statewide.
“The Bauchi State Government reiterates its commitment to addressing environmental challenges and strengthening infrastructure development to improve the living conditions of residents across the state,” he said.
Community leaders who joined the inspection expressed gratitude for the government’s prompt action and called for immediate execution of flood control projects.
Local residents who accompanied the team also commended the Ministry of Works and Transport for responding without delay.
The Councillor representing Duguri, Malam Lawal Ya’u, thanked Governor Bala Mohammed for identifying with the community in its time of distress.
“The Councillor of Duguri, Malam Lawal Ya’u, also thanked the state government for its responsiveness and continued support to the affected community,” he said.
