Abdulaziz Gets Second Term as TCN Boss, Power Sector Hopes Rise

Nigeria's power transmission sector is breathing a sigh of relief following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reappointment of Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz as Managing Director of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) for another five-year term. Industry observers say the move signals a vote of confidence in Abdulaziz's leadership.

"President Tinubu has passed a clear vote of confidence on Abdulaziz," says a sector expert. "The reappointment underscores the president's commitment to continuity and progress in the power sector."

Since taking the helm of TCN, Abdulaziz has overseen significant improvements in the country's transmission infrastructure. The grid's wheeling capacity has expanded to 8,700 megawatts, with the network reliably transmitting over 6,000 megawatts.

"We've achieved a lot, but there's still much work to be done," Abdulaziz said in a statement. "We remain committed to delivering a more efficient and reliable power transmission system for Nigerians."

Under Abdulaziz, TCN has commissioned 82 power transformers, adding 8,500 megavolt-amperes to the grid. The agency has also made strides in modernizing its operations, introducing technologies like Generation Load Drop Sensitivity (GLDS) to improve grid stability.

TCN has recorded a 76% reduction in grid disturbances, attributed to improved maintenance and infrastructure upgrades. The agency is also advancing regional electricity cooperation initiatives, including the North Core Project, which aims to enhance cross-border energy trade.

Analysts say Abdulaziz's reappointment bodes well for Nigeria's power sector. "Consistency in leadership is crucial for infrastructure development," says energy expert, Dr. Aisha Aliyu. "Abdulaziz has shown he's up to the task."

The challenge now is to build on the gains made and address Nigeria's pressing power needs. With demand outpacing supply, the focus is on expanding transmission capacity and improving efficiency.

As Abdulaziz embarks on his second term, expectations are high. "The work doesn't stop here," he said. "We must continue to innovate and deliver results for Nigerians."
