Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria, April 17, 2026(Series News Online)- The 8 Division of the Nigerian Army has concluded its 2026 Inter-Brigade Corporals and Below Competition, with 8 Division Garrison emerging as overall winner after four days of intensive military drills.
The exercise, held from April 13 to April 16, 2026, at the Giginya Military Cantonment, culminated in a closing ceremony at the Division Training School Obstacle Ground.
The competition was structured to assess physical fitness, tactical proficiency, and combat readiness of junior personnel. Troops participated in drill exercises, map reading, combat swimming, skills-at-arms, and obstacle crossing.
Formations that took part in the contest were 1 Brigade, 17 Brigade, 8 Division Garrison, 48 Engineer Brigade, and 58 Signal Brigade, all drawn from the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander of Sector 2 Joint Task Force (Northwest) Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, commended the soldiers for their commitment throughout the event.
He stressed the place of training in military professionalism, noting that younger personnel must see training as central to service.
“Soldiers may train more than they engage in actual combat, because continuous training ensures they can overcome any adversary,” Major General Koughna said.
He urged all personnel to take every aspect of their training seriously. “A significant portion of your careers will be devoted to continuous preparation,” he added.
The GOC congratulated all participants, especially those who distinguished themselves and the formations that finished as overall best and runners-up.
He encouraged all units to build on their performance. “Another competition is upcoming,” he said.
At the end of the event, 8 Division Garrison took first place with 590 points. 1 Brigade placed second with 490 points, while 58 Signal Brigade finished third with 460 points.
The closing ceremony was attended by representatives from various security and paramilitary agencies.
Highlights of the ceremony included obstacle crossing by troops, presentation of medals and trophies to outstanding formations and soldiers, and group photographs to commemorate the occasion.
