Kebbi Govt Launches War Against Drug Abuse, Mobilizes Fulani Youths

The Kebbi State Government has launched a robust campaign against drug abuse and addiction, mobilizing Fulani communities across the state's 21 local government areas. Governor Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu) initiated the campaign to promote attitudinal change and encourage productive living among youths. According to the Governor, "90 percent of criminality stems from drug addiction, which fuels insecurity."

To implement this initiative, Gov. Idris directed his Special Adviser on Nomadic Matters, Alhaji Muhammad Kiruwa, to embark on a statewide sensitisation across Fulani settlements in collaboration with the Ministry for Animal Health and Fisheries, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Addressing Fulani leaders, women, and youths in Birnin Kebbi, Alhaji Kiruwa conveyed the Governor's message, urging Fulani youths to desist from drug abuse. "The message of His Excellency, Gov. Nasir Idris, is simple and clear: Stop taking drugs, stop abusing drugs. Drugs are a source of criminality and insecurity," Kiruwa stated.

The Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries, Hon. Kabiru Usman Alaramma, explained that the Governor had established a full-fledged Ministry for Animal Health and Fisheries and had commenced construction of the largest Veterinary Hospital in Nigeria in Birnin Kebbi. The State Government had also entered into MOUs with Indonesia, Brazil, and Germany to introduce modern technology in animal husbandry.

The NDLEA Deputy Commander, Ibrahim Imam, educated the Fulani gathering on the dangers and consequences of drug abuse. A Fulani leader, Dikkon Gesse, expressed appreciation to the Governor for his continuous support to the Fulani community and urged his people to register with INEC and collect their PVCs in preparation for the 2027 elections.

The event featured goodwill messages from politicians, traditional and religious leaders, and government officials. The Governor's wife, Hajiya Zainab Nasare Idris, had donated wrappers and hijabs to Fulani women, while the Governor had donated animal feeds, salt, and cattle vaccines to Fulani communities across the 21 local government areas. Fulani youths and women will also be empowered with cash to start small businesses.
