The Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris (Kauran Gwandu), has commended Alhaji Abba Aliero for his philanthropic intervention in repairing two critical bridges in the state. The bridges, Rara Bridge in sokoto state and Liba Bridge in Maiyama Local Government Area, were recently damaged by devastating floods.
Governor Nasir Idris gave the commendation on his way back to Birnin Kebbi from Zuru, where he attended the burial of the late Emir of Zuru, Major General (Rtd.) Sani Sami, Gomo II. He stopped over to inspect the repair works and expressed appreciation for Aliero’s effort in complementing government initiatives. “The repairs have eased transportation challenges and prevented these bridges from being washed away by floods,” the Governor said.
The Governor stressed the need for local contractors to be given opportunities for federal and state projects. “I will raise this issue with the Federal Government and advocate for our capable local contractors to be given such opportunities,” he said. He noted that government alone cannot meet all societal needs and called on well-meaning individuals to support development efforts. “We thank Alhaji Abba Aliero for using his personal resources and equipment to save these bridges,” he added.
In his remarks, Alhaji Abba Aliero explained that he undertook the repairs to prevent the roads from being cut off and to assist commuters. “The route also serves as an international link to neighboring countries,” he said, expressing gratitude to Governor Idris for allowing him to carry out the intervention.
The Governor has since constituted a high-powered Flood Assessment Committee chaired by the Commissioner for Works, Hon. Engr. Abdullahi Umar Faruk (Muslim), to evaluate the extent of the damage and report to him in one week. The committee’s report is expected to inform the government’s response to the flood disaster and ensure that affected communities receive the necessary support.
