The Kebbi State Government has taken a significant step to enhance the operations of local government legislative councils by procuring and distributing brand-new, modern Hiace buses to all 21 councils. This move aims to ease the movement of councillors and improve their overall performance.
Governor Nasir Idris handed over the keys to the vehicles to the chairmen of the local governments, emphasizing the need for proper care and maintenance of the buses. "I am aware that some councillors resort to boarding public transport because they do not have cars of their own," the governor said, highlighting the challenges faced by councillors in carrying out their duties.
The governor explained that the buses are solely for legislative duties, intended to smoothen the movement of councillors. "These are new vehicles and expensive, which are only affordable by government," he added, stressing the importance of handling the vehicles with care.
To ensure accountability, Governor Idris warned that chairmen of local governments will be liable for any mishap or mishandling of the vehicles. "They must be handled with care and driven only by professional drivers with requisite composure," he advised.
This development is part of the state government's efforts to strengthen local government administration and enhance the welfare of councillors. With 21 local government areas in Kebbi State, each with multiple wards and polling units, the provision of these buses is expected to significantly impact the effectiveness of local government operations.
