The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has provided $200,000 as relief assistance to victims of the 2024 floods in Bauchi State. This gesture is part of ECOWAS's efforts to support affected families, communities, and individuals in the state.
According to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the regional body is providing support to six local government areas in Bauchi State, namely Giade, Gamawa, Zaki, Katagum, Jama'are and Kirfi. Represented by Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, Dr. Sintiki Tarfa Ugbe, ECOWAS is intervening with $200,000 for the purchase of food and non-food items for the flood victims.
Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Hon. Aminu Hammayo, acknowledged the devastating impact of the 2024 floods in the state. The floods caused significant infrastructure damage, displacement of over 30,436 households, and loss of lives. The Governor expressed gratitude to ECOWAS and the Federal Government for their support.
The relief assistance will benefit 1,000 households from the Gamawa, Zaki, Kirfi, Jama'are, Giade, and Katagum Local Government Areas. Each household will receive cash payments of N75,000.00, along with food and non-food items, including rice, garri, beans, vegetable oil, palm oil, blankets, mosquito nets, and plastic buckets.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Tanko Yusuf Sununu, commended ECOWAS for its generous funding support. The federal government remains committed to alleviating human suffering and fostering recovery for those affected by disasters.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society, represented by its President, Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, noted that the relief assistance will provide essential food supplies, blankets, mosquito nets, and dignity kits to protect the health and safety of the affected families.
