Abuja, Nigeria — April 30, 2026(Series News Online)-The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, upholding judgments of the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal that nullified the party’s national convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. The apex court ruled that the convention which produced the Turaki-led national executives lacked legal backing, citing failure to conduct valid state congresses in 14 states and improper signing of convention notices.
In a unanimous decision read by Justice Mohammed Garba, the five-member panel agreed with the lower courts that the convention disobeyed two Federal High Court judgments delivered on October 31 and November 14, 2025, and that statutory conditions precedent were not met before the gathering. The judgment effectively bars the Independent National Electoral Commission from recognizing or validating the Ibadan convention outcome and its executives.
With this ruling, the Turaki-led faction loses legal recognition, dealing a major blow to its plans to field candidates for the 2027 general elections. The Court’s decision reinforces the position of the Wike-aligned faction whose suit triggered the initial nullification at the Federal High Court.
