Kebbi Govt Rolls Out 3.1m Insecticide-Treated Nets to Combat Malaria

The Kebbi State Government, in partnership with the United States Government and Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), is poised to embark on a massive distribution of 3.1 million Insecticide-treated Nets (ITNs) to households across the state, aiming to combat the scourge of malaria.

"Mosquitoes pose a significant threat to the lives of children and pregnant women. With Nigeria recording over 68 million malaria cases annually, and an estimated 30% of child and 11% of maternal deaths attributed to malaria, this initiative is crucial," said Mrs. Patience Ochibe, Campaign Manager for GHSC-PSM, at a media briefing at the Malaria Control Unit Conference Hall, Birnin Kebbi.

The distribution seeks to mitigate the malaria burden in the state, where the prevalence rate stands at 49%, the highest in the country. "Using an insecticide-treated net is one of the most effective ways to prevent malaria, serving as a physical and chemical barrier against mosquitoes," Ochibe emphasized.

The Commissioner for Health, Hon. Yakubu Samaila Augie, represented by Director Public Health, Magaji Usman, stated that the state government has made necessary preparations for the distribution of over three million ITNs to households across the 21 LGAs, with the aim of eradicating malaria. "We urge residents to utilize the treated nets to safeguard their families," he said.

The State Malaria Elimination Programme Manager, Nasir Umar Zagga, appealed to media practitioners to support the campaign through consistent reporting, documentaries, and public awareness initiatives. and public awareness initiatives. "Media engagement is vital to achieving the broader goal of a malaria-free Kebbi state," he said.

The distribution process will involve registration of households from March 24th to 30th, 2026, followed by the issuance of token slips that will entitle each household to free nets. The nets will be distributed from April 12th to 16th, 2026.

A total of 1,217 designated distribution points have been approved, and 12,000 personnel have been recruited for the exercise, following national guidelines. All personnel are from their respective communities, ensuring access to hard-to-reach areas and areas with security concerns. The exercise is being carried out in collaboration with security agencies to ensure a smooth and secure distribution process.
