In a significant act of clemency, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has granted executive pardon to 73 convicted inmates, describing it as a constitutional duty guided by compassion and justice. Each of the beneficiaries will receive N100,000 to support their reintegration into society.
"This is not a routine administrative act, but a sacred trust that demands wisdom, restraint, and careful evaluation," Governor Bala said. "The prerogative of mercy requires balancing the sanctity of the law and the higher calling of redemption."
The governor explained that the decision followed a thorough review process, custodial centre visits, interviews, and assessments of the inmates' conduct. "This was not a symbolic gesture; it is a thorough, evidence-based process, grounded in fairness and accountability," he added.
According to Governor Bala, the clemency is a deliberate decision to give deserving individuals a new lease of life. "We are choosing restoration over perpetual condemnation. We are affirming that no human being is beyond reform."
Attorney General and Chairman of the Council for Prerogative of Mercy, Barr. Hassan El-Yakub SAN, stated that 117 applications were reviewed before 73 inmates were selected for pardon. He said the governor also approved financial support for compensation, palliatives, and transportation to ease reintegration.
One of the beneficiaries, Musa Muhammed Shira, expressed gratitude for the governor's mercy, pledging to become a responsible member of society. "We appreciate the freedom granted us and promise to be law-abiding citizens," he said.
Governor Bala urged the beneficiaries to use their experience to counsel others, saying, "There is dignity in crime, no honour in violence, no future in shortcuts. Your strength lies in discipline, education, enterprise, and service to society."
