Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has led a tree-planting exercise to commemorate the state's 50th anniversary, emphasizing the importance of environmental sustainability and collective responsibility.
Speaking at the event, Governor Mohammed described the initiative as both practical and symbolic, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 13, which calls for urgent action against climate change. "This exercise is practical because it directly addresses the environmental challenges we face today, and symbolic because it reflects who we are as a people, rooted in responsibility, forward-looking, and committed to the well-being of present and future generations," he said.
The Governor noted that the tree-planting exercise serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility of citizens to protect and preserve the ecosystem for future generations. He called on the people of Bauchi State to recommit themselves to unity, peace, and sustainable development, saying, "As we commemorate 50 years of statehood, we have chosen to mark this milestone not only with words and ceremonies, but with actions that uplift all of us."
Governor Mohammed explained that the 50 trees planted symbolize 50 years of Bauchi State, representing growth, resilience, sacrifice, and progress. "There is no better way to honour this journey than by planting trees, which are universal symbols of life, continuity, hope, and renewal," he stated.
The event concluded with the ceremonial planting of trees, each named after past and present leaders of Bauchi State, symbolizing continuity, legacy, and shared responsibility in building a greener and more prosperous future for the state. Governor Mohammed also announced the renaming of Eagle Sino Park to "Bauchi Golden Jubilee Park" and revealed plans to establish more parks across the state with similar environmental and social objectives.
