Sokoto State has launched an Oral Cholera Vaccination (OCV) campaign in a bid to curb the spread of cholera in the state. The campaign targets two high-risk Local Government Areas (LGAs) - Dange Shuni and Goronyo - with approximately 650,000 people aged 1 year and above expected to receive the vaccine.
"The OCV campaign is a response to the recent confirmed cholera cases in the state, and we are working to prevent further spread and protect high-risk communities," said a health official.
The vaccination exercise has recorded a strong turnout, with community members, especially in schools and Quranic learning centers, showing enthusiasm and acceptance.
"Malam Adamu's Quranic school in Kanwuri area, Fajaldu ward, Dange Shuni LGA, has over 200 pupils who received the vaccine, while Sahabi Denge Model Primary School had 1,300 pupils eager to receive the vaccine," a community leader said.
The Oral Cholera Vaccine is needle-free, painless, and effective in stimulating intestinal immunity, making it ideal for mass vaccination campaigns in rural and low-resource settings.
"The vaccine is safe, and it will help prevent cholera outbreaks in our communities. We urge everyone to take advantage of this opportunity and get vaccinated," said Dr. Euphemia Ugu, a health expert.
The campaign also emphasizes the importance of maintaining good hygiene and environmental sanitation, drinking safe water, and seeking immediate medical care for diarrhea or cholera-like symptoms.
"We must work together to combat cholera and protect our communities. Let's take the vaccine and practice good hygiene," a community health worker said.
The OCV campaign is ongoing, and health officials are urging all eligible individuals to get vaccinated and help prevent the spread of cholera in the state.
