Search for Common Ground Promotes Peace, Security in Nigeria-Benin Border Communities

A collaborative effort between Nigeria and Benin Republic has taken a significant step forward with the staging of a participatory theatre event in Kamba, Kebbi State. Organized by Search for Common Ground, the initiative brought together stakeholders from both nations to tackle shared security concerns and foster peaceful coexistence.

The event, part of the Nigeria-Benin Border Communities Peace Initiative, leveraged theatre as a tool for dialogue and conflict resolution. Local theatre groups from Nigeria and Benin presented performances highlighting the challenges facing border communities, including insecurity, cattle rustling, and restrictions on free movement, prompting open discussions and collaborative problem-solving among attendees.

"The event has offered a unique opportunity for communities from Nigeria and Benin to publicly highlight issues impacting peace and security," remarked the Mallanville Chairman, who also chairs the Dandi Ganda Cross-Border Framework. "We recognize the efforts of Search for Common Ground in promoting cooperation and strengthening ties across the border, reflecting global priorities of peace, security, and social cohesion."

Alhaji Mamudu Zarumai Kamba, District Head of Kamba, expressed appreciation for the initiative, stating, "This programme has enabled communities to identify factors driving conflict, share experiences, and jointly propose solutions in a peaceful and innovative manner."

The event promoted a deeper understanding of shared risks, bolstered cooperation between border communities, and underscored the importance of sustained dialogue in maintaining peace and stability along the Nigeria-Benin border.
