The Kebbi State Ministry of Agriculture celebrated Field Farmers' Day at Gayi village in Kalgo Local Government Area, marking a significant milestone in the state's agricultural development. The event brought together farmers, top officials, and stakeholders to share successes and showcase achievements in boosting food production under the administration of Governor Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu.
In his speech, Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Shehu Muazu, highlighted the challenges posed by climate change, emphasizing its impact on food production in Nigeria. "Climate change is one of the greatest problems facing food production today," he said. To address this, Governor Kauran Gwandu introduced the Climate Adoption Seeds Support Programme, aimed at providing farmers with seeds suitable for the changing climate.
The Commissioner announced plans to distribute super susat millet seeds to over 3,000 farmers next year, as part of efforts to create a resilient food production system across the state. He urged farmers to adopt these seeds and support the state's agricultural revolution policies. "We have brought super susat seeds and distributed them to our farmers in this area, and we plan to distribute more to thousands of farmers next year," Muazu said.
Professor Adamu Muhammad, a professor of agronomy at Abdullahi Fodiyo University, Science and Technology, Aliero, offered expert insight into the benefits of super susat millet seeds. He noted that this variety is well-suited for the Sudan Savannah zone of Kebbi State, with advantages including faster growth, resistance to certain pests, and the ability to bypass seasonal flooding. "This super susat millet seed is a very good variety for our localities, with better yields and other benefits that our traditional millet does not possess," Muhammad said.
One of the beneficiaries, Malam Abdullahi Gayi, testified to the effectiveness of the super susat millet seeds, saying he harvested 136 tons of millet from one hectare of land after planting just one ton of the seeds. "I have seen the importance of this variety, as it has different advantages over our traditional one," Gayi said, urging fellow farmers to adopt the new seeds.
Other speakers at the event, including Alhaji Abubakar Udulu and Mr. Jowel Aiki, commended the Commissioner for Agriculture and the state government for their initiatives to support farmers and boost food production.
