Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, Nigeria - September 26, 2025 (Series News Online)
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Kebbi State Council has intervened in the illegal deduction of September 2025 salaries of teachers in the state. The NLC took swift action after receiving a complaint from the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), which led to an immediate investigation.
The findings of the investigation revealed that the deductions were made without due approval, and the affected teachers were not informed. A joint delegation of NLC, led by State Chairman Comrade Murtala Usman, met with the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education and Finance to resolve the issue.
After meeting with the Governor, His Excellency Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, it was resolved that the deductions were not approved by the Governor, and he directed the immediate reversal of the deductions to the affected members. The Governor also cautioned the Ministry of Finance and other relevant ministries to desist from making any deductions from workers' salaries without due approval.
The NLC leadership expressed sincere appreciation to the Governor for his timely intervention, which averted industrial disturbance in the state. The state Secretary of NUT, Comrade Gazali Hassan Maccido, confirmed that their union was not aware of the deductions and thanked the Governor for his quick intervention.
"We thank Almighty God and the state Governor Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu for the quick intervention and immediate directive of reversing the action taken by deducting our members' salaries illegally," Comrade Maccido said. "We urge our members to continue to be law-abiding and channel their complaints to the leadership of the union."
