In a bid to promote literacy and digital inclusion, the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has taken a significant step by organizing a Literacy Awareness Campaign at Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Kalgo. This initiative, which coincides with the 2025 International Literacy Day celebrations, showcases the University's commitment to giving back to the host community. The campaign, which featured a vibrant joint rally by hundreds of staff and students from both FUBK and GDSS, aimed to instill a love for reading and writing among the students. The theme "Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era" underscored the importance of digital literacy in today's world.
Prof. Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, Vice Chancellor of FUBK, represented by Prof. Aliyu Abdullahi Turaki, emphasized the University's dedication to empowering the host community through literacy promotion. He encouraged school administrators and teachers to leverage the University's resources to enhance their students' learning experience.
The University's Registrar, Abdulkadir Abubakar, highlighted the institution's core objectives of teaching, research, and community service. He described the initiative as a humble effort to give back to society and promote literacy.
The guest speaker, Prof. Bello Bala Usman, stressed that literacy encompasses not only reading and writing but also acquiring digital skills that can open doors to new opportunities. He urged students to view technology as a tool for learning, creativity, and problem-solving.
The District Head of Kalgo, represented by Dan-Galadiman Sarkin Gobir Mal. Abubakar Arzika Kalgo, expressed gratitude to the University for the initiative and encouraged them to sustain the momentum.
As a token of its commitment to promoting literacy, FUBK donated 12 collections of 120 literary books to GDSS Kalgo. This gesture is expected to enhance the students' access to reading materials and foster a culture of reading in the community.
