A coalition of stakeholders has intensified efforts to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) at Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, by advocating for the establishment of a specialized Response Team. The group, Technical Working Group (TWG) on GBV, made this known during a recent visit to the institution.
According to Comrade Nasiru Idris, Secretary of the TWG on GBV, the proposed Response Team would serve as a safe haven for survivors of violence to report incidents without fear of reprisal. "The team would ensure that cases are handled with utmost confidentiality and sensitivity," he emphasized.
Idris further explained that the initiative would foster a culture of fairness and accountability between lecturers and students, while also facilitating access to medical, legal, and psychosocial support services. This, he noted, would be a significant step towards creating a safe and inclusive learning environment.
The management of the Polytechnic, represented by the Deputy Rector, acknowledged the existence of a Sexual Harassment Committee but pledged to consider the proposal for a dedicated GBV Response Team. "We will present this proposal to the management, and we will consider it," he assured.
The TWG also seized the opportunity to educate students on the dangers of GBV, urging them to be proactive in reporting incidents and promoting a culture of zero tolerance. "Students must be vigilant and report any form of violence to the relevant authorities," Idris advised.
The visit culminated in a renewed commitment from both the Polytechnic management and the TWG to work together in tackling GBV within the institution. The TWG delegation was warmly received by the Deputy Rector, the Polytechnic Librarian, and other senior management staff, as well as representatives of the Student Union Government (SUG).
