A somber atmosphere pervaded Zuru as the nation bid farewell to the late Emir of Zuru, His Royal Highness, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammad Sani Sami, Gomo II. The revered traditional ruler passed away at a London hospital last Sunday.
The funeral prayer, held after the Jumu’at prayer, drew a galaxy of stars, including the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, and other prominent Emirs from across the country. The Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, led the Federal Government's delegation, paying tribute to the late monarch's remarkable life and legacy.
Describing the Emir's passing as a monumental loss, Shettima said, "Today is a sad day for the people of Kebbi and indeed for Nigeria. I am here on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to personally convey his heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Kebbi State, the royal family, and the entire people of the North."
The Vice President eulogized the late Emir as a statesman who dedicated his life to serving God, humanity, and the nation. "He served this country in various capacities, placing his life on the line to keep Nigeria united," he said. "May Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannah Firdaus and give his family, the Government of Kebbi State, and the people of the Zuru Emirate the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss."
The late Emir was laid to rest at the Zuru Emir's Palace, with the Vice President, Gov. Nasir Idris, and other dignitaries in attendance. The Nigerian Army paid a fitting tribute, holding a military parade in honour of the late monarch, who was a retired Maj.-Gen.
The Kebbi State Government had earlier established several committees to ensure a seamless burial ceremony, including a main organizing committee and a high-powered delegation led by the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
