Sokoto, Nigeria - The Umaru Shinkafi Legacy Foundation has announced the winners of its maiden essay competition, showcasing the intellectual prowess of young scholars from Northwestern Nigeria. A total of 610 entries were submitted by undergraduate students from 25 tertiary institutions across the region.
Dr. Zainab Shinkafi-Bagudu, President-elect of the Union for International Cancer Control and CEO of Medicaid Cancer Foundation, expressed the foundation's commitment to fostering critical thinking and meaningful dialogue among youths. "Our goal is to empower the next generation of leaders with knowledge, skills, and values that will drive positive change in our society," she stated.
Abubakar Idris, a dental surgery student at Usmanu DanFodio University, Sokoto, took top honors, winning a brand-new tricycle for his thought-provoking essay on security challenges in the region. "This award will motivate me to work even harder and make a difference in my community," Idris said.
Hafiz Sani Galadima, a nursing sciences student at Usmanu DanFodiyo University, Sokoto, came second, receiving a motorcycle, while Asiya Muhammad Dansanda, a student of educational economics at the Federal University, Gusau, won third prize with a cash award of ₦1,000,000. A total of 15 students received cash prizes ranging from ₦800,000 to ₦100,000.
The prize presentation ceremony was held on July 13, 2025, at Umaru Shinkafi Polytechnic, Sokoto, in honor of the late Umaru Shinkafi, a former Minister of Internal Affairs and Director-General of the Nigeria Security Organisation. His legacy continues to inspire public service and leadership.
