The Federal Government has delivered relief items to Kebbi State aimed at mitigating the difficulties faced by victims of natural disasters. The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaidah Umar, presented the allocation papers to Governor Nasir Idris on behalf of the Federal Government at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi on Friday.
Zubaidah informed the governor that the Federal Government was aware of the challenges faced by Kebbi State as a result of natural disasters. "There has been flooding in some local government areas, while a devastating windstorm wrecked havoc in Zogirma town. These disasters have disrupted the livelihood of hundreds of people who have remained resilient in times of difficulty," she said.
The relief items, which include foodstuffs and other materials, are intended to complement the efforts of the state government in rehabilitating communities affected by the disasters. The NEMA DG thanked the governor for providing office accommodation to NEMA in Birnin Kebbi, announcing plans to construct 200 housing units for its resettlement scheme.
In response, Governor Nasir commended NEMA for its proactive approach and mitigation efforts to save lives and property during calamities. "I am aware of the excellent performance of the DG, Zubaidah Umar, who is an indigene of Kebbi, daughter of the soil. She has been proactive in disaster management," he said.
The governor noted that his administration had established a committee of experts to sensitize communities living in disaster-prone areas and relocate them to safe areas if necessary.
