The Kebbi State Government has initiated a training program for approximately 800 government and public transport drivers on modern traffic rules and regulations. This move aims to reduce road accidents and enhance the safety of lives and property of passengers and drivers.
According to the Commissioner for Transport and Renewable Energy, Hon. Bala Muhammad Yauri Gagga, Governor Nasir Idris has prioritized safeguarding lives and property. "Consequently, the governor has reintroduced intensive training for both drivers in government employment and commercial drivers to fully enlighten them on traffic stipulations and adherence to the law," Hon. Gagga stated. He emphasized that respecting traffic rules and regulations is obligatory for drivers.
The training is a precursor to the launch of the Kebbi Transport Authority, established by law after Governor Nasir Idris's assent. Hon. Gagga revealed that the Ministry of Transport and Renewable Energy has taken possession of six boats for water transport along maritime communities in the state. These boats will be stationed in Zamare, Yauri, Dolekaina, Ngaski, Samanaji, and Zauro.
The Commissioner also mentioned plans to provide vehicles to members of drivers' unions for public transport under an agreement to be finalized. "The unions want the government to give them money to purchase vehicles or alternatively have the privilege to receive them on soft loan from the government," he explained.
Regarding recurring misunderstandings between Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs)/Road Safety Officers and drivers, Hon. Gagga said engagement with all parties is ongoing to resolve the issue.
The Director of the Road Traffic Department, Mallam Danlami Kanya, described the training as highly important, emphasizing that lack of knowledge on traffic rules contributes to increased accidents. "The Department is grateful to Governor Nasir Idris for reviving the training scheme, which will help manage road transport and curb accidents," Kanya added.
The Executive Chairman of the Kebbi State Board of Internal Revenue, Aminu Abdullahi, represented by State Licence Officer Ibrahim Abubakar Kalgo, declared the training open.
