A devastating multiple vehicle accident occurred on Monday night in Okene, Kogi State, claiming the lives of six persons and leaving five others seriously injured. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office in Kogi State confirmed the accident to newsmen in Lokoja on Tuesday.

According to Samuel Ogundayo, Acting FRSC Sector Commander in Kogi State, the accident was "tragic and very unfortunate". Ogundayo explained that the accident involved seven vehicles, including two trucks, two tricycles, and three cars, and occurred at Old Zango in Okunchi community, Okene around 8:30 pm.

"The accident occurred when one of the trucks in the front rolled back while climbing Zango hill, lost its brake and in the process crushed two commercial tricycles, three cars, and one truck," Ogundayo said. "The tragic and unfortunate incident left six persons dead and five others injured."

The FRSC rescue operatives quickly responded to the scene, rushing the injured to the Referral Hospital, Okene for treatment, while the corpses of the dead were deposited at the Mortuary of the Okene General Hospital.

"It took the efforts of our officers and personnel from other security agencies to clear the blockade on the highway for free flow of traffic," Ogundayo added.

The Commander advised motorists to always take precautions by giving good distance to trucks on highways, especially at hilly areas, to avoid any eventuality. "Motorists should endeavour to keep to the traffic rules and regulations to help in reduction of road crashes and carnage on our roads," he emphasized.
