The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern states and Abuja, Reverend John Joseph Hayab, has sounded a warning against the destructive nature of betrayal, which he believes has long hindered Nigeria's development. In an Easter message titled "Overcoming Betrayal at Easter," Hayab lamented that betrayal has become a major obstacle to national growth, citing its impact on the country's security and development.
"Nigerians are betraying the country; people are betraying one another, and all these have contributed to the many challenges the nation is grappling with today," Hayab stated after the Sunday service in Kaduna. He pointed out that betrayal is a significant factor in the security agencies' inability to curb the activities of bandits terrorizing different parts of the country.
The CAN chairman drew parallels between the biblical story of Judas Iscariot's betrayal of Jesus and the consequences of betrayal in modern times. "When Judas Iscariot agreed to betray Jesus by collecting money in return, he later hanged himself because he understood that he had betrayed an innocent soul, Jesus Christ," Hayab said. "Anybody who betrays the trust of another person, people, community, state, or country does not end well in their life."
Hayab emphasized that those who betray trust assigned to them do not fare well, citing the example of those who betrayed Jesus and humanity. "Those who betrayed Jesus and humanity ended up destroying themselves," he said. "Those who choose the path of destroying others should stop it because their end is always disastrous."
The CAN chairman appealed to individuals to be faithful in keeping their responsibilities and to work together with security agencies to keep the country safe and united. "If this country trusts you and gives you a responsibility, it is expected that you will be found faithful," he said. "Lack of faithfulness in keeping our responsibilities and keeping the treasury of the country is betraying the trust bestowed on an individual."
Hayab urged Nigerians to shun betrayal and work towards unity and faithfulness, assuring that those who choose the path of destruction will ultimately face disastrous consequences. "We should work together with the security agencies to keep the country safe and united," he said.
