Gunmen suspected to be Lakurawa bandits invaded the villages of Baziga and Rausar Kade in Arewa Local Government Area, Kebbi State, on Thursday, killing six persons and rustling an unspecified number of cattle. Governor Nasir Idris, accompanied by heads of security agencies, visited the affected communities on Saturday to condole with them and assure them of the government's determination to put an end to such attacks.
"Since the advent of my administration, we improved the security outlook in Kebbi South, Zuru, and Yauri axis, but what's happening now in Kebbi North, Argungu Emirate, is a desperate game of hit and run by bandits," Governor Idris said. "There's no single camp of the hoodlums in Kebbi, but they are infiltrating from neighboring states to come in and commit mayhem before escaping."
The Governor assured the communities that the government is committed to bringing an end to the attacks. "The government is saddened by what has happened to you, the people of Baziga and Rausar Kade. That's why I am here with Security Chiefs to study the security architecture and landscape, to put an end to such wanton destruction of lives of innocent people and theft of their belongings."
During his visit, Governor Idris directed the Chairman of Arewa Local Government, Hon. Sani Aliyu Tela, to sink two solar-powered motorized boreholes to ease the difficulty of water supply in Baziga. He also mandated the Chairman to sink a similar borehole in Rausar Kade and complete the construction of the town's Jumu'a Mosque within two weeks.
The Governor donated one million naira each to the families of the six persons killed in the attack and five hundred thousand naira to each of the two victims who received gunshot wounds and are now recuperating. He also gave three million naira to the elders, women, and youth of both communities.
The Chairman of Arewa LGA, Hon. Sani Aliyu Tela, informed the Governor about the mode of the attack, saying that the bandits took off from Matankari on the border with Sokoto State, invaded the village of Rausar Kade, and rustled some cows. The Chairman commended the men of the Nigerian Police and soldiers who responded promptly to the distress call by the victims.
