Kebbi State Targets N50 Billion Annually from Onions Economy

Kebbi State is poised to generate over N50 billion annually from the onions economy, with the state government taking practical steps to harness the potential of the commodity. According to Abubakar Bagudu Dallatun Kalgo, Secretary of the Federation of Agricultural Commodities Associations of Nigeria and Member, Kebbi State Exports Promotion Committee, the state is ready to explore the vast opportunities in the onions economy.

Onion production is a significant economic activity in Kebbi State, with Nigeria producing over 2 million metric tons valued at over N700 billion annually. However, the sector faces challenges such as high production costs, seedlings deficiency,equipment deficit, post-harvest losses, and market fluctuations.

To address these challenges, the Kebbi State government has initiated the Agricultural Development Initiative (KADAGE), which focuses on increased production, value addition, and strategic exports marketing of agricultural produce. The state government has also taken an active interest in the activities of the National Onions Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria.

Recently, the Kebbi State Governor, Comrade Dr. Nasir Idris Kauran Gwandu, donated N10 million to facilitate the hosting of the 6th International Onions Conference in Sokoto. The state government has also inaugurated the Kebbi State Chapter of the National Onions Producers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria to guide the activities of onions stakeholders and value chain operators.

To minimize production costs, the state government plans to invest in solar-powered irrigation machines, certified seeds, extension support, and access to finances. Marketing difficulties will be reduced by establishing a one-stop shop mechanism, streamlining documentation, and reducing border checkpoints.

The establishment of a jute bag manufacturing company using raw materials available in Koko Besse Local Government Area will address the major problem of onion farmers and marketers in Kebbi State. With the current efforts to establish an Export Transit Hub in Tsamiya, Bagudo Local Government Area, and create a conducive environment through ease of doing business mechanisms, Kebbi State is poised to become a major player in the onions economy.
