Pro Chancellor of Kwararafa University, Dr. Andrew Yakubu La'ah, has made a passionate call for the establishment of a department of Kwararafa history and Center for historical documentation of Kwararafa Kingdom at the university. This appeal was made shortly after he received an honorary doctorate in Science from the institution.
As the former Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Dr. Yakubu emphasized the importance of understanding historical roots in shaping a promising future. "If we do not know where we are coming from, we may not likely know where we are going," he stated. His connection to the Kwararafa Kingdom, being a descendant, inspired this advocacy, which aims to attract historians worldwide to explore the kingdom's history.
Dr. Yakubu also highlighted the need for the Middle Belt and other cultures to celebrate their rich heritage, positioning themselves as leaders rather than followers of global trends. "For us to stand out as a unique kingdom, and to compete with other cultures across the globe, we must invest and celebrate our unique cultural heritage," he emphasized.
The ultimate goal, according to Dr. Yakubu, is to make the university self-sufficient, serving the community's educational needs. Plans are underway to enhance teaching and learning environments, providing students with high-quality opportunities. Founded in 2005 by the Jukun chiefdom under the Aku Uka's leadership, the university focuses on intellectual and moral development.
Kwararafa Kingdom has a storied history, dating back to the 16th century, with its capital in Wukari. The kingdom was known for its bureaucratic state and spiritual importance, with the Jukun people at its center . By establishing a historical documentation center, Dr.
